Rest in Power, Leo Gerard, A Champion of the Labour Movement

The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) mourns the passing of Leo W. Gerard, a trailblazing leader whose loss is felt deeply across the labour movement. We join his family, friends, Steelworkers, and the entire labour movement in grief and remembrance.

Leo Gerard, International President of the United Steelworkers from 2001 to 2019, was only the second Canadian to lead the union, representing 1.2 million members across North America at the height of his tenure. Born in Creighton Mine, Ontario, and following in the footsteps of his father, a union organizer, Gerard began working at Inco at 18. He quickly rose from chief steward of USW Local 6500’s 7000 members to District 6 Director, Canadian National Director, and International Secretary-Treasurer before becoming International President.

His unwavering leadership left a lasting imprint on the fight for health and safety, gender equality, pensions, fair trade, global solidarity, and decent work, causes that remain at the heart of the labour movement today.

The labour movement has lost a true champion. Leo Gerard’s vision and determination changed countless lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of workers.

We thank Leo for his unwavering contributions. Rest in power, Leo.

We will carry on your legacy.
