OFL statement on October 29, 2026 death of City of Toronto traffic agent

The Ontario Federation of Labour extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the City of Toronto traffic agent and CUPE Local 79 member who was killed at work on October 29, 2026. This loss is felt by all of us in the labour movement.

No worker should lose their life on the job. Everyone should come home safe and sound at the end of the workday.

We stand in solidarity with CUPE Local 79 and everyone affected by this devastating loss. A full criminal investigation into the circumstances of this death is needed, and immediate action must be taken to address any hazards identified.

Worker safety cannot wait until after a tragedy. Employers must take every necessary step to protect frontline workers and ensure they can do their jobs without losing their lives.
