The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) is deeply saddened by the passing of Nancy Hanschmann, a dedicated activist, union leader, and champion for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
Nancy was a proud member of CUPE, locally, regionally and nationally, and worked with the CUPE Ontario and CUPE National Pink Triangle Committees.
She was also a long-time member of the OFL’s Solidarity and Pride Committee and served on the OFL Executive Board as Solidarity and Pride Vice President from November 2018 to November 2019. Her unwavering commitment to workers’ rights and her fierce advocacy for equity and inclusion made a lasting impact on the labour movement.
Nancy understood that solidarity was more than a word—it was a call to action. She devoted her life to lifting others up, ensuring that workers, particularly those from marginalized communities, had a voice at the table. Whether she was organizing on the ground, building safer spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ workers, or standing shoulder to shoulder with other unionists on the picket line, she led with courage, compassion, and an unshakable belief in justice.
Her legacy will live on in the many activists she mentored, the movements she strengthened, and the communities she fought for.
The OFL extends our deepest condolences to Nancy’s family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. We honour her memory by continuing the fight for fairness, equality, and dignity for all workers.
Rest in power, Nancy. Your work and spirit will not be forgotten.
