Community and Labour Groups to Protest Budget Unfairness

(TORONTO, ON) – Nearly 100 buses are expected to join thousands of Ontarians from all walks of life for the largest protest of McGuinty’s term. Community and labour groups from over 30 towns and cities as far away as Timmins will converge at Queen’s Park today at 3:00 pm to demand fair taxation from banks and corporations.

Only days before the final vote on McGuinty’s first minority budget, widespread public opposition is expected to turn up the pressure for a more conciliatory approach from the Premier. A campaign launched by nearly 90 community and labour groups under the banner, “We Are Ontario,” is calling together everyone who objects to unfair budget cuts that will deliver deep cuts and job loss to Ontario families.

EVENT:    Ontario Day of Action Against Cuts
DATE:     Saturday, April 21, 2012
TIME:     3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
WHERE:     Rally at Queen’s Park and march through Toronto’s elite shopping district

“McGuinty lost his majority during the last election because Ontarians wanted to see more balance and fairness from his government. If McGuinty ignores voters and refuses to find compromise with the NDP, then the blame is going to land squarely at the Premier’s feet,” said OFL President Sid Ryan. “McGuinty can’t ask struggling families to make greater sacrifices if he isn’t also going to ask banks and corporations to scale back their profits. Our economy can’t prosper unless there is a plan for everyone to share in the recovery.”

“We Are Ontario” represents millions of Ontarians represented by the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) and nearly 100 community groups and labour unions.
