BREAKING: The Supreme Court of Canada has struck down provisions of Ontario’s Bill 307, rejecting Premier Ford’s unconstitutional attempt to silence dissent and interfere with fair elections. The ruling affirms what Ontarians already knew: Ford trampled on Charter rights to protect his own political interests.
Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) President Laura Walton responded:
“Ford’s government rammed through these unconstitutional changes—a direct attack on democratic rights aimed at those who hold him accountable. Today, the Supreme Court has sent a clear message: no government is above the Charter, no matter how hard Ford tries. This is a victory for democracy and for every Ontarian who fought back against Ford’s abuse of power.”
In 2021, the Working Families Coalition and Ontario unions stood firm against Bill 307, calling it a blatant attack on democratic rights and an attempt to silence opposition. They took the Ford government to court—and won.
“The Supreme Court has affirmed what Ontarians already knew: Ford’s attack on free expression was unjustified and undemocratic. No matter how many times he tries to silence opposition, Ontario’s labour movement will not back down. This ruling is a reminder that when we fight, we win—and we’re just getting started.”
