Statement from the Ontario Federation of Labour regarding the defeat of Bill 42

The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) expresses immense disappointment in the defeat of Bill 42, the Gender-Affirming Advisory Committee Act. This legislation was a crucial step towards ensuring the rights and dignity of Trans, non-binary and gender-diverse individuals across Ontario.

Laura Walton, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour, stated, “The rejection of Bill 42 is a setback for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and a failure to recognize the urgent need for gender-affirming care in our province. Every individual deserves access to the support and resources necessary for their authentic expression and well-being.”

Rob Boulet, Solidarity and Pride Vice President at the Ontario Federation of Labour added, “This defeat is a stark reminder of the systemic barriers faced by Trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people in accessing essential healthcare services. It is imperative that we continue to fight for inclusive policies that prioritize the health and safety of all Ontarians.”

Considering this setback, the OFL will never stop pushing this government to improve gender-affirming healthcare. We urge all citizens to call on their MPPs to advocate for improved gender-affirming care in Ontario. Gender-affirming care is not only essential but lifesaving for Trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people. It is time for our elected representatives to prioritize the well-being and rights of all Ontarians, regardless of gender identity.

Tonight at 6:00pm, MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam and Rev. Dr. Cheri Di Novo, are hosting an online training on lobbying MPPs, with a focus on education around gender-affirming healthcare. MPPs across the province need to hear how important this issue is to so many. Join us!
