We are deeply saddened by the passing of Stephen Lewis, a towering figure in the fight for social justice, human dignity, and global equity.
Throughout his extraordinary life, including Leader of the Official Opposition as Ontario NDP leader, Stephen Lewis was a powerful and principled voice for the most vulnerable and was a champion of workers’ rights. As Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations he took those principles and passion to a global stage – confronting inequality and leading with courage in the global response to HIV/AIDS.
His lifelong commitment to justice left an indelible mark on the labour movement and on all who believe in a fairer world.
At the 2017 Ontario Federation of Labour Convention, he captured that spirit with words that continue to guide us:
“What most of the world fails to understand is that the trade union movement does not consist purely of collective bargaining and labour relations. You fight for justice at every front.”
Like the labour movement, Stephen Lewis did exactly that, at every stage of his life.
Stephen Lewis believed deeply in the power of solidarity without borders, and in the responsibility, we share to stand up for one another. He challenged us to be bolder, to think beyond ourselves, and to remain steadfast in the pursuit of justice wherever it is needed.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy will live on in the continued struggle for justice he so passionately advanced.
