As Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) members escalate their labour actions, the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), its 54 affiliated unions and provincial labour councils stand in solidarity with them in defence of our public education system.
The OFL encourages all Ontarians to support these education workers as they take action against the dismantling of Ontario’s award-winning kindergarten programs and reckless government cuts to our public education system.
“This government’s attack on public education in Ontario is unconscionable,” said OFL President Patty Coates. “Education funding was already 3 per cent lower than the previous year, and further cuts will only serve to hurt our education system even more. This government should be building an Ontario for all, where everyone can thrive. These cuts will hurt kids and families who depend on the public education system to prepare their children for success in the future.”
ETFO educators have made it clear to this government that children in this province need a fully funded public system, with a funding model for special education that reflects the reality in classrooms across Ontario.
“The government’s attack on kids and families continues with its recalcitrant approach to bargaining with ETFO and the other education unions. There is no sign that the Minister is putting the best interests of Ontario students anywhere in his plan for public education in this province,” said Coates.
The Ontario Federation of Labour represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario. For information, visit www.OFL.ca and follow @OFLabour on Facebook and Twitter.
