OFL united in solidarity with Palestinians

The Ontario Federation of Labour forcefully condemns the continued attacks by Israeli authorities against Palestinians. This escalation of conflict, ignited by Israel’s imminent confiscation of Palestinian homes in Sheikh Jarrah, has resulted in hundreds of deaths, including children, over 1,000 injured, and has left many homeless.

As an organization that fights to uphold human rights and dignity, the OFL extends our solidarity with Palestinians and joins the call for Canada to condemn the Israeli government’s actions. The deadly assaults by Israeli forces on residential buildings, international media offices, refugee clinics, and a medical clinic, including Gaza’s only COVID-19 testing lab, are devastating. These bombardments followed a horrific attack by Israeli security forces on worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque during one of the holiest days of Ramadan.

The Ontario Federation of Labour is committed to challenging settler-colonialism and government actions that violate basic human rights. From our ongoing solidarity with 1492 Land Back Lane to international solidarity with Palestinians we recognize that all workers’ struggles are connected. The OFL has signed the National Council of Canadian Muslims open letter to Prime Minister Trudeau with the following demands:

  • Work with allies to use diplomatic means to pressure Israel to stop their current policies on forced evictions;
  • Reinforce the sanctity of religious sites like the Al-Aqsa Mosque from state and police violence and to resist any potential attempts to change status quo of Al-Aqsa; and
  • Safeguard the lives of those under occupation, who face unequal and disproportionate rates of COVID-19.
