The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) has a vacancy for a Director in our Human Rights Department. The successful candidate will report to the Officers of the OFL through the OFL’s Executive Director.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant will have:

  • minimum five years of experience directing labour, human rights, equity and social justice initiatives, including:
    • strategic planning of departmental level plans and goals, strategies and tactics;
    • developing campaign / departmental materials;
    • facilitating and overseeing the implementation of departmental plans;
    • coordinating logistical and strategic arrangements related to campaigns/ meetings/ conferences and events;
    • engaging affiliated members, allies and community members to take action;
    • conducting ongoing departmental evaluations.
  • an understanding and knowledge of working-class issues and the role of unions in our workplaces, communities, country and on international solidarity;
  • proven knowledge of human rights, immigration and employment equity principles and practices;
  • experience developing and implementing Anti-Oppression frameworks, policies and processes in organizational settings;
  • the ability to analyse and work on human rights from a broad perspective (union, workers, economic, social, cultural and political rights);
  • a broad understanding of current human rights issues, in particular issues for First Nations, Métis, Inuit people, workers of colour, persons with disabilities, and two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and intersex+ workers (2SLGBTQI+) in a provincial, Canadian and International context;
  • experience working with community-based organizations of First Nations, Métis, Inuit peoples, workers of colour, persons with disabilities and 2SLGBTQI+ communities and other equity-seeking peoples;
  • the ability to analyse a broad range of policies and practices from a trade union and anti- racist perspective;
  • the aptitude to provide meaningful input into the development of campaigns, programs, projects including strategic planning, measures of success and accountability;
  • the ability to analyse and articulate the impacts of public policy on First Nations, Métis, Inuit workers, workers of colour, persons with disabilities and 2SLGBTQI+ workers and their communities in Ontario, Canada and internationally;
  • excellent communications, presentation, and writing skills;
  • experience with various social media platforms;
  • demonstrated volunteer management capabilities;
  • strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • the ability to travel and/ or provide their own transportation, as required;
  • demonstrated an ability to research and develop educational materials;
  • proven track record in advocating for human rights at government functions, community meetings, and internal human rights working groups;
  • demonstrated an ability to organize large events such as conferences and forums, and
  • the ability to work in both English and French is considered an asset.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • support the work of the OFL through the implementation of organizational priorities for advancing human rights, anti-racism, and anti-oppression;
  • design and implement projects and programs that carry forward the work of the department, and support the political action mobilization efforts of the Federation;
  • support the work of OFL’s equity committees and promote a greater understanding of human rights issues within the labour movement and in the community;
  • support self-organizing activities of First Nations, Métis, Inuit workers, workers of colour, persons with disabilities and 2SLGBTQI+ workers at OFL events;
  • promote rights of First Nations, Métis, Inuit workers, workers of colour, persons with disabilities and 2SLGBTQI+ communities;
  • participate in the development of OFL policies related to human rights issues;
  • conduct research, write and edit reports on assigned issues;
  • write copy for web and social media components of campaigns and issues;
  • maintain relations with Ontario affiliates, NGOs and government departments involved in related work;
  • build and maintain effective partnerships with allied community organizations;
  • work with other OFL departments to insert human rights issues into campaigns and to implement the Department’s programs, projects and campaigns at all levels;
  • participate in advocacy and lobbying work with the provincial government;
  • analyze the impact of provincial government positions and decisions on working women, their families and communities;
  • participate in the development and implementation of work plans and budgets;
  • initiate and support activities with social justice partners at the provincial level;
  • represent the OFL at meetings with non-labour organizations and government agencies;
  • be available to work weekends and evening hours, frequently as required, and
  • complete other duties as assigned by the Officers through the OFL’s Executive Director.

Full-time, permanent position, working out of the Federation of Labour office in North York, Toronto. The successful candidate is covered under the COPE 343 Collective Agreement, and is entitled to all benefits as outlined in the collective agreement.
