The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) has a vacancy to cover a leave in our Research and Education Department. The successful candidate will report to the Officers of the OFL through the OFL’s Executive Director.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will have:
- A graduate education at an accredited university, with a strong emphasis on economics, labour legislation and/or pension policy, or equivalent experience;
- A demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to the needs of the labour movement;
- Experience connecting qualitative and quantitative data;
- Experience and demonstrated ability concerning social policy, a sound knowledge of the Ontario and Canadian political systems;
- Experience and a proven grasp of policies, structure, and operation of the labour movement in Ontario;
- An understanding and knowledge of working-class issues and the role of unions in our workplaces, communities, province, country and in building international solidarity;
- Excellent oral and presentation skills, including the development of multi-media and web-based presentations;
- Excellent written communication skills, including demonstrated aptitudes with technical writing, research reports, plain-language opinion pieces and accessible popular education materials;
- Proven ability to analyse the intersectionality of social categorizations such as race, class and gender and their interconnectedness as they apply to individuals, groups, or communities, and
- A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle;
*The ability to work in both English and French will be considered an asset.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Support the work of the OFL through the development and implementation of organizational priorities, policies and projects in the areas of research and education;
- Analyze the impact of provincial government positions and decisions on working people, their families and communities;
- Write government briefs and submissions and publicly articulate the policies of the Federation;
- Brief officers and other directors on key public policy issues;
- Author discussion papers on behalf of the Federation, working with affiliated unions;
- Develop original research for campaigns, opinion editorial pieces and other uses;
- Co-ordinate a working group of union researchers, who meet twice a year;
- Assist in strategic decision-making, as it relates to key policy issues;
- Deliver presentations before government committees and to lead dynamic public seminars and training workshops on the work and campaigns of the Federation;
- Work with the OFL standing committees on pensions and labour relations;
- Participate in advocacy and lobbying work with the provincial government, and
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Officers through the OFL’s Executive Director.
The Director must be self-motivated and a team player, who can work with officers, other directors, affiliates and coalition partners on projects and campaigns.
Full-time, temporary position (covering a leave until June 30, 2021, with the possibility of extension), working remotely, and when public health directives permit, out of the Federation of Labour office in North York, Toronto. The successful candidate is covered under the COPE 343 Collective Agreement, with a weekly salary of $2,205.57 including COLA plus benefits.
