Take Back The Night is the oldest global movement fighting against sexual violence. This September and October, communities worldwide will unite to take a stand.
In Ontario, across Canada, and around the world, women, girls, Trans, and gender-diverse people face violence daily because of their gender, gender expression, gender identity, or perceived gender. Those with multiple marginalized identities often suffer even more, facing higher rates of sexual violence and struggling to get the support they need.
The statistics are shocking and demand immediate action:
- 1 in 3 women worldwide experience sexual or intimate partner violence.
- 1 in 6 men worldwide face sexual violence.
- 2 in 3 Trans people have been sexually assaulted.
- People in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community are more likely to experience sexual violence.
- Less than 50% of victims report these crimes.
This isn’t just a problem in other countries. In Canada, the numbers are alarming and require urgent attention:
- 44% of Indigenous women experience physical or sexual abuse by an intimate partner, compared to 25% of non-Indigenous women.
- Indigenous women in other marginalized groups (disabled, 2SLGBTQIA+, etc.) face even higher risks.
- 70% of Trans youth in Canada have experienced sexual harassment.
- Women with disabilities are sexually assaulted at rates over four times higher than those without disabilities.
Join in the fight against sexual violence. Attend a Take Back The Night rally, march, or event near you and show your support for survivors and commitment to ending sexual violence.
Check the list of events below to find one near you.
