National Indigenous Peoples Day watch party of the film “Invasion” and discussion panel

In the lead up to National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, the Ontario Federation of Labour First Nations, Métis, Inuit Circle (FNMI) are hosting a watch party of the film “Invasion”.

“Invasion” is a film about the Unist’ot’en Camp, Gidimt’en checkpoint and the larger Wet’suwet’en Nation standing up to the Canadian government and corporations who continue colonial violence against Indigenous people.

The Unist’ot’en Camp has been a beacon of resistance for nearly 10 years. It is a healing space for Indigenous people and settlers alike, and an active example of decolonization. The violence, environmental destruction, and disregard for human rights following TC Energy (formerly TransCanada) / Coastal GasLink’s interim injunction have been devastating to endure, but this fight is far from over.

Join the OFL FNMI Circle to watch the film, followed by a discussion about some of the ongoing struggles Indigenous communities face today, including land invasion, access to clean water, systemic racism, and the broader anti-colonial struggle.

Moderator & Panelist Bios:

(Moderator) Daniel Stevens is a member of the Ontario Federation of Labour FNMI Circle, a lecturer, private consultant on Indigenous reconciliation practices, secondary school teacher, and disabilities activist.

Eve Saint is a Wet’suwet’en Land Defender. Eve was one of four arrested on Gitdumt’en territory during the 2020 raids on Wet’suwet’en territories. She is the daughter of a Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Woos.

Sol Mamakwa is a Kingfisher Lake band member and a resident of Sioux Lookout. He is the MPP for the Kiiwetinoong riding and the NDP Critic for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. Before being elected to office, Sol was the lead health advisor for the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation.

Ron Rousseau is the Canadian Labour Congress VP for Indigenous Peoples and President of the Yukon Federation of Labour. He is also a traditional dancer with the Dakhka Khwaan dance group.
