April 27 marks the 30th anniversary of Freedom Day in South Africa, when the first free and fair elections took place in 1994. That victory continues to inspire the ongoing fight against Anti-Black Racism, from South Africa to Turtle Island and beyond.

We mark Freedom Day this year against the backdrop of the global fight for a ceasefire in Israel-Palestine, the return of hostages and Palestinian political prisoners, the restoration of aid to Gaza, a two-way arms embargo, and an end to Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Join us on April 27 for an online panel discussion about the historic defeat of Apartheid in South Africa, the fight against apartheid in Israel today, and what labour can do to support peace, justice, and security for all people of the region.

Speakers include:

  • Rieaz Shaik: High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Canada
  • Judika Tladi: First Secretary, High Commission of the Republic of South Africa to Canada
  • Zahia El-Masri: Founder, Collective of Women for Palestine; and member, Labour for Palestine
  • Matthew Green: NDP Member of Parliament for Hamilton Centre
  • Suzanne Weiss: Member, Independent Jewish Voices; and author, Holocaust to Resistance: My Journey
  • Ahmad Gaied: Secretary-Treasurer, Ontario Federation of Labour; and member, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists Canada
  • Yolanda B’Dacy (moderator): Director of Human Rights, Ontario Federation of Labour

A discussion period will follow the speakers, with questions and comments from attendees.
