50 public health nurses who provide care to almost 200,000 residents in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties have been on strike since August 21, 2023. They have been without a contract since December 2022.

These nurses keep our community healthy. With the lack of primary care providers in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties, public health nurses provide infant feeding and well-baby care, immunizations, sexual health and harm reduction services, infectious disease monitoring, and so much more. A disruption to these public health services compromises the health of children and their families in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.

The Board of Health received nearly $1 million in additional funding through municipal levies this year, yet the employer refuses to pay public health nurses wages that keep up with inflation. Hospital nurses received average wage increases of 11% over 2 years, but public health nurses are falling behind. Better working conditions for nurses means better care for people in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
