Ford’s Conservative government has decided to shut down 10 Safe Consumption Sites (SCS) across Ontario, leaving Northern Ontario— where the opioid mortality rate is three times higher than the South — without any harm reduction services. This decision will have dire consequences for those struggling with substance use, especially in communities already facing the brunt of the opioid crisis.
Harm reduction saves lives, reduces overdose deaths, and provides vital support to those in need. Closing SCS will only increase deaths, 911 calls, and hospital overcrowding, while leaving frontline workers – including paramedics, healthcare professionals, and construction workers – with the overwhelming burden of handling preventable overdose crises in public spaces.
The Ford Government must stop these harmful cuts and instead expand harm reduction services across the province. Evidence shows that SCS saves lives, reduces healthcare costs, and keeps communities safer.
Stop the shutdown – save lives!
