Tenants in 33 King Street and neighboring buildings are organizing with York-South Weston (YSW) Tenant Union to fight for fair rent and address various issues they are facing with their landlord, DREAM. Tenants are specifically demanding the withdrawal of existing above guideline rent increases (AGIs). The AGIs being issued throughout the city have only served greedy landlords, while burdening hardworking tenants who are already grappling with the increased cost of living and inadequate wages. Tenants across the city are saying Enough is Enough!
What’s particularly distressing is 33 King Street West is the building with the highest number of AGIs in Toronto and despite paying for certain amenities, such as the pool and balconies, tenants have been denied access to these facilities for over a year. Yet, they are still expected to pay the full amount.
With these grievances, the tenants have put forward three demands to their landlord, DREAM:
1. Withdraw the existing above guideline rent increases (AGIs).
2. Commit to no further AGIs in the building.
3. Provide a rent discount to compensate for the loss of services, including balconies and visitor parking.
It is imperative we unite in solidarity with our neighbors as they fight against their landlords.
It is imperative we show predatory landlords that tenants will not tolerate above guideline rent increases while their maintenance requests are continuously being ignored and living conditions are not improved.
On July 15th, join YSW Tenant Union to march down Weston Road to their MPPs and MPs offices, to say Enough is Enough and demand that they enforce Fair Rent and keep landlords accountable.
