These members work as audiologists, interpreters, deaf-blind intervenors, employment counsellors and in other roles supporting Deaf and hard of hearing Ontarians. Their work is largely invisible but they provide critical services that create access and equity.
At issue is not only the employer’s paltry offer that would push workers further behind inflation, but also the employer’s adamant refusal to meaningfully and fairly bargain.
The last time this local was in this position, members were targeted and vacation and benefit policies were unilaterally changed.
The CEO, Julia Dumanian, earns 122 per cent more than the previous CEO – bringing home $340,000/year – while CHS while workers have fallen 16% behind inflation during her tenure.
Before coming to CHS, Julia took a $500,000+ severance from Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
CHS used to have 500 workers; they are down to 200, a result of plummeting morale and poor pay which is having an impact on services.
