(TORONTO, ON) -- The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) expressed frustration that Metron Construction boss Joel Swartz won’t be facing jail time for the deaths of four workers and serious injury to another. While applauding the historic conviction of the company – the first in Ontario to face conviction for criminal negligence – the OFL made it clear that the $1-million fine sought by the prosecution doesn’t deliver sufficient justice to the victims and their families.
Tune in to CBC Radio’s “Sunday Edition” on Sunday, May 6 after the 9 am news to hear OFL Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Hutchison and retired USW National Health and Safety Coordinator Andy King talking to Michael Enright about the 20th anniversary of the Westray Mine disaster. This tragedy resulted in the deaths of all 26 miners who were working underground at the time and gave rise to Bill C-45, which became known as the “Westray Bill.”
