THE DRIVE TO WORK CARAVAN IN NIAGARA REGION JUNE 23
(TORONTO) -- – The Drive To Work Caravan splits up and spreads out in the Niagara Region for the next two days with stops in Nanticoke, Welland, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Hamilton.
The Ontario Federation of Labour’s Drive to Work Caravan has travelled to more than 50 cities and towns in Ontario since its launch on June 8th. Along the way the thousands of people have had a chance to have their say on the need to preserve and create good jobs and maintain strong public services for healthy communities.
The economic crisis that had been confined to Ontario’s manufacturing and forestry sectors over the past few years has now spread across the entire economy, into every sector.
In Hamilton-Niagara the loss of jobs and loss of earnings has been sharp and widespread. The first four months of 2009 saw 30,800 fewer people working than in 2008; jobless rates are up sharply in 2009 from 6.7 per cent to 9.5 per cent; the unemployment rate for youth is up to 16.3 per cent; one in seven men are out of work and the jobless rate for women rose to 7.0 per cent.
The downturn has hit even those who are still working. Workers in Hamilton-Niagara worked 2.8 per cent fewer hours so far this year, compared to last year.*
Communities all across Ontario are reeling from the economic storm that has hit our province, Canada and the world. Thousands of people have lost their jobs. Cities and towns are on red alert as public services are cut back at a time when people and communities need them most.
“It’s time to tell the stories behind the statistics,” says OFL President Wayne Samuelson who has been travelling the province with the Caravan since the June 8th launch.
