Nominations are open for the Ontario Federation of Labour Solidarity & Pride Champion Award

 

The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) is seeking nominations from affiliates, local unions and labour councils for the SOLIDARITY & PRIDE CHAMPION AWARD.

This new annual award is to acknowledge and celebrate individuals or groups who have made a significant or ongoing contribution to the advancement of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and two-spirit (LGBTQI) human rights, equity and inclusion.

Nominees must be leaders in advancing equality and quality of life for LGBTQI people in workplaces, community and globally.

The OFL encourages affiliates, local unions and labour councils to remember equity seeking nominees from the LGBTQI community who also identify as racialized, aboriginal and disabilities groups in their selection of potential nominees.

Please submit your nomination in writing explaining why the nominee is eligible based on the criteria form attached. Please include all the nominee’s contact information. All nominations must be made in writing and received at the Ontario Federation of Labour by May 6, 2017.

Selection: The OFL Solidarity and Pride Committee will review written nominations and make a recommendation to the OFL Officers and Executive Board.

This annual award is to acknowledge and celebrate individuals or groups who have made a significant or ongoing contribution to the advancement of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and two-spirit (LGBTQI*) human rights, equity and inclusion, who are leaders in advancing equality and quality of life for LGBTQI* people in workplaces, community and globally.

Recipient Criteria

The nominee must be an individual or group who has not previously received this award and who:

  • Live or work within the region of Ontario and identify as a member of the LGBTQI* community or represent members of the LGBTQI* community.
  • Takes a proactive role in raising awareness and championing LGBTQI* issues.
  • Is committed to furthering diversity and inclusion in the workplace and promoting social justice for LGBTQI* people in the broader community.
  • Is a leader in advancing equality and understanding for LGBTQI* people and advocates in the human rights and labour movements to advance the rights and freedoms of the LGBTQI community.
  • Is passionate about breaking down barriers for LGBTQI* people everywhere.
  • Has promoted LGBTQI* rights and equality within the labour movement, community, and/or legislative reform.

Actions/activities that could be considered criteria for the Award are achievements, efforts, mobilization, organizing campaigns, notable leadership and years of service.

Please send the name and affiliation of the individual or group you wish to nominate to OFL Human Rights Director Carrol Anne Sceviour via email csceviour@ofl.ca. Please describe the nominee’s achievements, efforts or leadership and how their LGBTQI* activism has positively impacted the labour movement and/or their community allies.

Selection Process

The selection of an individual or group recipient of the OFL Solidarity & Pride Champion Award is based on exceptional achievement and union/community activism that incorporated and promoted human rights and equality for LGBTQI* people. The OFL Solidarity & Pride Committee will review all nominations and make a recommendation to the OFL Officers and Executive Board. Recipients selected for the award will be honored with a Plaque of Recognition.
