OFL NEWS CONFERENCE TODAY IN HAMILTON $10 AN HOUR MINIMUM WAGE CAMPAIGN
(TORONTO) -- At a news conference today in Hamilton, Don Fraser, President of the Hamilton & District Labour Council and Wayne Samuelson, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour demanded that the McGuinty government raise the minimum wage to $10 for the province’s poorest workers.
“This is just the start of a province-wide campaign,” Samuelson said. “We are here today to fight for a decent standard of living for workers across the province who are trying to survive on the minimum wage.”
“Since the McGuinty Liberals voted Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) a 25% raise we thought everyone should see just how much that is compared to a minimum wage earner,” Samuelson told reporters at the news conference pointing to three piles of money.
The money piled up at news conference represented:
The 25% wage increase for Ontario MPPs: $22,192.75
Yearly increase of the minimum wage for a full-time worker:
40 hours a week X 52 weeks X 25 cents $ 520.00
25% increase for a Cabinet Minister with Portfolio $ 9,387.50
“Cabinet Ministers like Hamilton Mountain MPP, the Honourable Marie Bountrogianni, should be ashamed of themselves,” said Don Fraser. “They certainly find the time to take care of themselves while thousands and thousands of Ontario workers can’t make enough on minimum wage to put bread on the table.”
