(TORONTO) -- “Day of Mourning ceremonies allow all Canadians and people throughout the world to pay respect to those working people who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the workplace. These are the workers who have died or suffered injuries and occupational disease,” said Irene Harris, secretary-treasurer of the Ontario Federation of Labour.

Last year 356 workers died and 317,031 workers filed claims for workplace injuries and disease. “We must continue to pressure employers and government to make workplaces safer in order to prevent this terrible and unnecessary toll,” Harris said. “Earning a pay cheque should never be life-threatening.”

Irene Harris will join with the Sault Ste. Marie and District Labour Council, community groups and activists on April 28 for the Day of Mourning ceremonies.
