Listen to OFL’s Nancy Hutchison On CBC Radio’s “Sunday Edition”: May 6 After the 9 am News

Tune in to CBC Radio’s “Sunday Edition” on Sunday, May 6 after the 9 am news to hear OFL Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Hutchison and retired USW National Health and Safety Coordinator Andy King talking to Michael Enright about the 20th anniversary of the Westray Mine disaster. This tragedy resulted in the deaths of all 26 miners who were working underground at the time and gave rise to Bill C-45, which became known as the “Westray Bill.” Championed by the United Steelworkers and the labour movement across Canada, the legislation amended the criminal code to impose charges on employers who wantonly jeopardized the safety of their workers. Two decades after the tragedy, the OFL’s “Kill a Worker, Go to Jail” campaign continues to seek the enforcement of this legislation.
