Association of Ontario Health Centres

The AOHC is the non-profit organization that represents community health centres (CHCs) and some health service organizations (HSOs). AOHC activities support an promote the provision of community-based primary care, health promotion and illness prevention services. Their approach to community health includes a consideration of the broader factors that determine health such as education, employment, income, social support, environment and housing.

Canadian Health Coalition

The Canadian Health Coalition is dedicated to preserving and enhancing Canada’’s public health system for the benefit of all Canadians. Founded in 1979, the coalition includes organizations representing unions, seniors, women, students, consumers and health care professionals from across Canada.

Canadian Health Economic Research Association

CHERA/ACRES is a national membership-based non-profit organization which promotes Canadian health research. Its members come from a variety of backgrounds, including health economics, health services research, health policy, health care administration, epidemiology, medicine, nursing and political science. Members function at all levels of research and decision-making, ranging from federal and provincial departments of health to health care research units and regional health bodies.

Canadian Healthcare Association

The Canadian Healthcare Association (CHA) is the federation of provincial and territorial hospital and health organizations across Canada. The CHA represents a broad continuum of care, including acute care, home and community care, long term care, public health, mental health, palliative care, addiction services, children, youth and family services, housing services, and professional and licensing bodies. These services are provided through regional health authorities, hospitals and other facilities and agencies that serve all Canadians and are governed by trustees who act in the public interest.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is an independent, national, not-for-profit organization working to improve the health of Canadians and the health care system by providing quality, reliable and timely health information.

Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis

CHEPA is an interdisciplinary research centre based at McMaster University that is committed to producing high-quality, original, socially relevant research in health economics and health policy analysis and to disseminating research evidence to decision makers in the health sector.

Centre for Health Services and Policy Research

The Centre for Health Services & Policy Research was created by the Board of Governors and Senate of the University of British Columbia in 1990. Its overall mission is to stimulate scientific enquiry into issues of health in population groups, and ways in which health services can best be organized, funded and delivered.

Centre for Research in Women’s Health

The Centre for Research in Women’s Health is committed to conducting and fostering women’s health research which is relevant to women’s lives, and to promoting its application in diverse communities.

Health Canada is the federal department responsible for helping the people of Canada maintain and improve their health. In partnership with provincial and territorial governments, Health Canada provides national leadership to develop health policy, enforce health regulations, promote disease prevention and enhance healthy living for all Canadians.

The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation promotes and funds management and policy research in health services and nursing to increase the quality, relevance and usefulness of this research for health-system policy makers and managers. In addition, the foundation works with these health-system decision makers to support and enhance their use of research evidence when addressing health management and policy challenges. Any foundation project, process or activity always involves both researchers, and managers, policy makers from academia and Canada’s health system.

Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences

The Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) is an independent, non-profit organization, whose core business is to conduct research that contributes to the effectiveness, quality, equity and efficiency of health care and health services in the province of Ontario.

International Institute of Concern for Public Health

The International Institute of Concern for Public Health is a Canadian-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities assess and improve their environmental health status. The IICPH alerts and informs the public of the health hazards of pesticides, nuclear industries and other commercial, military, and industrial products. As well—independent of government and industry—the Institute provides the evidence and documentation needed by survivors of environmental disasters. This unique and essential service both supports and furthers the key principle on which the IICPH operates: that a safe environment is a fundamental human right.

Medical Reform Group

The Medical Reform Group is a voice for physicians and others who share the MRG principles and beliefs and we do this by: analyzing the principles and structures of the present health care delivery systems; exploring and supporting innovation; education and forming alliances with like minded individuals and groups working for positive change in the health care system.

Ontario Health Coalition

The Ontario Health Coalition is Ontario’s most broadly representative voice for public health care policy. Its membership encompasses 300 member groups: community health coalitions, health care worker at all levels, unions, social development agencies, women’s groups, seniors’ groups, low income and homeless people’s organizations, ethnic and multiracial minorities’ groups, faith-based organizations and other citizens’ organizations.

Ontario Hospital Association

The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) is a voluntary organization representing approximately 160 public hospital corporations, or 225 sites, in Ontario. Among its members are all the public hospitals in Ontario as well as the province’s psychiatric hospitals. Many other health-related organizations are among OHA’s approximately 200 associate and affiliate members. Founded in 1924 as an independent, non-profit organization, the Association is governed by a 28-member Board of Directors comprised of hospital trustees and chief executive officers from across the province, as well as a physician and a nurse.

Ontario Medical Association

The Ontario Medical Association is a voluntary membership organization representing Ontario’s approximately 24,000 physicians. The OMA is recognized as the organization officially representing the economic and professional interests of the province’s doctors.

Ontario Nurses’ Association

The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) is the union that represents 50,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, community agencies and industry throughout Ontario.

Ontario Women’s Health Network

The Ontario Women’s Health Network (OWHN)/ Le Rééseau ontarien pour la santéé des femmes was created in August 1997 to provide information to help women make informed health care choices. OWHN works with women, service and care providers, local groups, health practitioners, and other health organizations in Ontario to network around women’s health issues.

Registered Nursing Association of Ontario

The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) is the professional association representing 16,000 registered nurses in Ontario. It is the strong, credible voice leading the nursing profession to influence and promote healthy public policy.

Romanow Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada

The Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada will make recommendations on sustaining a publicly-funded health system that balances investments in prevention and health maintenance with those directed to care and treatment. In accepting to head the commission, Roy Romanow says, “The task before us is to draw upon the ingenuity of all Canadians to ensure that our health system meets the challenges of the 21st century.”

The Tommy Douglas Research Institute

Connecting to the Romanow Commission is an initiative by the Tommy Douglas Research Institute. The future of Canada’s public health care system is of importance to all Canadians. Industry experts, politicians and corporate interests will continue to play a prominent role in shaping the debate, but the Institute wants to ensure that all Canadians are given the opportunity and the tools they need to have their voices heard.
